If you are tired of the last rent increase, and now you are thinking about moving to another neighborhood, zip code, or city, here is an interactive dynamic map that shows the Affordable Rental Areas in California. This dynamic map was prepared by the LA Times team: Ryan Murphy and Priya Krishnakumar.
With this tool, you indicate your total annual family income and the portion (percentage) of the total income that you want to allocate for the monthly rental. The map will show the zip codes in the whole California State where your income and percentage allocation can afford the rent.
This tool is a great help because you don’t need to move out of the state, you can move to another region inside California and still have the benefits of the Golden State.
The tool takes the rental cost from several rental ads published in Zillow and might not include all the utilities.
Also, if you want to see if a particular city is affordable or not, you can get information about the approximate number of units you might found in a particular city based on your income and percentage allocation. Just write a particular city in the top left corner field in the map, and the map will show you the approximate number of rental units.
