Grace H. Kim is an international architect and recognized expert in cohousing and on this video she explains how cohousing works and how it helps to fight the loneliness of so many American families.
Cohousing is a way of living where people choose to share space with their neighbors, get to know them, and look after them. Rethink your home and how you live in it with this eye-opening talk. Grace Kim is an architect and lives in a Cohousing Apartment Building. From the exterior, it doesn’t look quite different, however, families visually share part of their spaces and also they enjoy more activities together in the shared common areas.
Living in a big house and in a nice neighborhood can be the American dream for many families, however, for those that don’t have family members living in or near your neighborhood your big house may become a cocoon where you feel protection by isolation. We share with you the last Grace Kim’s TED Talk published recently to understand how cohousing, a housing model, can fight the loneliness of the American people.
Lately, PBS news published an article explaining also cohousing. People are choosing to live in intentionally intergenerational communities, which emerged to strengthen social ties between aging seniors and their younger counterparts who are balancing work and family. People living in them say the model fosters an interdependent environment and helps everyone feel more comfortable with the process of getting older. The main difference between a condominium is the shared activities to build the relationships among the residents. NewsHour Weekend’s Saskia de Melker reports.
If you are interested in this type of housing model, you can join the Cohousing Association of the United States website. On this website, you can learn more about what means cohousing and find the right cohousing project in the directory of your state.
In California, there is also a specific website named Cohousing California, where you can find the places where to find cohousing projects.
Remember cohousing are intentional and collaborative communities created to bring together the value of private homes with the benefits of more sustainable living. That means residents actively participate in the design and operation of their neighborhoods, and share common facilities and good connections with neighbors. All in all, they stand as innovative and sustainable answers to today’s environmental and social problems.
