Jeffrey Prang, the Los Angeles County Assessor urges Homeowners to Apply for $7,000 Exemption in Property Tax. The assessor’s office estimates that nearly 400,000 homeowners in Los Angeles County have failed to take advantage of the savings.
If you own a home and occupy it as your primary residence, rather than vacation or second home, on the tax lien date of January 1, you may apply for a Homeowners’ Exemption that will reduce your assessor’s assessed value by $7,000. On an average, you will save between $70.00 and $80.00 on your taxes.
If you are a new owner, you will automatically receive an exemption claim form in the mail. However, because most owners are unclear about what that application is and they fail to complete it and send it in.
To receive 100 percent of the exemption ($7,000), you must file the exemption by February 15. If you file after February 15 but before December 10, you will receive only 80 percent of the exemption ($5,600).
The exemption can be applied to your change of ownership supplemental if the prior owner of the property (seller) was not receiving the exemption.
There is no cost to file. The assessor also warned residents against fraudsters who offer to file an exemption for a fee. There is no filing fee, no need to re-apply once qualified and county employees are happy to help homeowners with the process
